I will always remember my father giving me an Eastwing hammer for my 18th birthday, he wasn’t flush with cash and it was probably from his stock but it’s one present I used throughout my career. Ironically this is my most valuable tool not in monetary terms but nostalgically and it reminded me of that point in time. This same hammer sits in my workshop 33 years later and still used daily and I’d probably be lost without it, we have been through so much together and created so many good things. That’s the true gift he probably can’t remember he gave me.
Most craftsman are practical people and genuinely know it to be good practice to consider used tools over expensive modern types in their daily lives. Most of us who use them would never say no to a good tool that helps us every day and because we use them, we become attached to them. But knowing the person would it be inappropriate buying vintage tools as a gift? How would someone with much less knowledge go about it?
It’s always hard to buy someone a gift and even harder to buy them a used vintage tool as a gift, especially if you don’t know if it’s a good one. Getting it wrong it will ensure the connection between craftsman and his new vintage tool is never formed, especially if it doesn’t work properly and requires a lot of work to get right. That is never a problem with Tooltique, everything is as should be and to a high standard to meet anyone’s demanding expectations.
If you identify a tool someone needs and it’s listed here in our website, we can assure you the first time they use it they will soon realise you did your research properly and chose something that they will soon be using on a daily basis with the same thoughts I have with my hammer.
Get it right and your gift will be for life and a reminder every day of good times, always in their thoughts and will in some way be of assistance with the things the person creates.
What do you buy them? Look for tools that they may have had problems with, it’s mostly planes for woodworkers or they might just be using cheap saws, cheap chisels etc. Look for tools they don’t own but wish they did or just look for things that could be upgraded.
