Warning, this article could take up a chunk of your evening and cause you serious enlightenment.
In the new year we will be adding a more comprehensive selection of wooden planes to the website which often get overlooked by woodworkers but I wanted to show a collaboration of videos out there for a more in-depth look at what these old tools offer, which is considerably good value when certain obstacles are tackled first.
The first video is a snippet from what is a near 2 hr tutorial that covers probably 70% of the actual time needed to make a ogee moulding plane although it gives a better insight why they are made in a certain way. I’ve purchased and watched the full video which is good viewing although what it does demonstrate mostly is the large amount of work and effort needed involved in producing a single moulding plane. It’s fair to say that when it has been watched once in its entirety you will never ever consider a vintage moulding planes anything other than extremely very good value. Watch Preview Here
If you aren’t familiar with using these planes then next 2 video’s (approx 25 mins each) by Bill Anderson will be a perfect introduction into using moulding planes. Full DVD available to buy here
The third Video (approx 20 mins) by Paul sellers is helpful with sharpening and shaping irons.
Enjoy the show and hopefully when that large selection is listed in the new year it will now be viewed in a different light.
